Pictures from Professor Henry Maddick
These pictures were kindly provided by Henry Maddick, currently (2007) the most senior OTS member in terms of year of entry into the King Edward VI Grammar School.
The pictures all date from the Spring Term 1931. The boy second from the right in the second picture (boat house) is the same as the bigger boy in the sixth picture (cross country races).
Frank Allingham (1925-1935) has provided the following comments:
"The cox is ME! So I really ought to remember the names of the crew: Picture 2 in front of the boathouse - the oarsman on the right of the picture is unquestionably Ken Mellor: I am more than half sure that the person on the left is Maurice Hanks (younger son of the headmaster at that time) and I think that the person next to him is Potter from Bude (can't remember his Christian name). But the name of the person between Ken Mellor and me eludes me.
I'm not sure why I am on the shore in picture 1 - hopefully the crew have come to pick me up.
In the staff boat I think Mr Guy is at bow, and the one with the bald head in the centre looks uncommonly like Mr Phelps, though it would never have occurred to me that he could possibly be that athletic (but it was 1931).
Sadly, I think the 'Boat' Club, as I think it was known, was wound up not long afterwards. We used to row in the Totnes Regatta and race against a town crew. Mr Guy was our coach."
The oarsmen in the first two pictures are the same.
The boy to the rear in the picture of the sixth form study may be Peter Gray.
The pictures were scanned from very small originals (about passport photo size) taken on a cheap Kodak expanding camera, but still show remarkable detail.
