A call for information from the Totnes Heritage Group
In 1891.Frederick Reeves a Totnes builder opened a sawmill on the banks of the River Dart, This was the beginning of the Reeves timberyard which from this small beginning went on to operate for more than 100 years and became one of the largest employers in Totnes.
The Totnes Heritage Group, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, is aiming to record the history of the Reeves timber yard and its impact on the local economy throughout the 20th century. Working in conjunction with the Totnes Image Bank, the Totnes Heritage Group is planning to produce an illustrated book about Reeves, as well as mounting a large photographic exhibition.
The Totnes Heritage Group is eager to talk to people who worked for Reeves or anyone who lived in Totnes and had any dealings with the firm, or may have memories or photographs of the various activities connected with the timber yard. Please contact either Diana Reeves on 01803 863170 or the secretary of the Totnes Heritage Group on 01803 867461 or email thkendall@phonecoop.coop
